Practical Flashcards
Aim
To examine the positive experiences of using day care for parents with children at nursery and preschool using structured interviews
Null hypothesis
There will be no difference in parental positive experiences of day care in a nursery compared to preschool. Any difference will be due to chance factors
Hypothesis
There will be a significant difference in the degree to which parents report positive experiences of their children in nursery compared to preschool
Independent variable
Using independent groups. One group contains 5 pairs of parents being interviewed who have a child who has attended preschool under the age of 5. The other group contains 5 pairs of parents being interviewed who have a child that has attended nursery before the age of 3 years old
Dependent variable
Positive experiences recorded by parents
Measuring cognitive, language and pre academic performance in children (aged 3-5) who have had high quality childcare during infant- toddler and/or preschool and those who have not
Research method
structured interview - standardised questions - qualitative and quantitative data
Level of significance used
P<0.05
Statistical test and justification
Mann Whitney
Difference
Independent groups (nursery vs preschool)
Ordinal data - ranked
Sampling method
Opportunity sample
Those available at the time
Procedure
Structured interview w a mixture of open and closed questions to gain qualitative and quantitative data
Questions are all standardised
Parents opportunity sample from collegiate lower school and are told all ethics
Researchers aren’t present - avoid social desirability/ researcher effects
Results will be analysed e.g quantitatively counting up number of positives or devising a scoring system
