Prac Exam 1 Flashcards
Define a colles fracture.
radiolucent transverse fracture of the distal aspect of the radius
How does one obtain a colles fracture?
commonly due to a fall on a hyperextended/outstretched hand with a pronated forearm in dorsiflexion
scaphoid and lunate push against radius
Osteology of the forearm: what bone is more medial?
ulna
Osteology of the forearm: what bone has the olecranon and coronoid process?
ulna
What are the eight carpal bones? Proximal = lateral to medial then distal =medial to lateral
scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform
hamate, capitate, trapezoid, trapezium
Injury to what nerve can occur with colles fracture?
an incomplete lesion of the median nerve can occur
sometimes lesions of the superficial branch of the radial nerve or compression of the ulnar nerve
What pulse can be affected with a colles fracture?
radial nerve pulse
Thumb movement and innervation: what muscle causes flexion?
flexor pollicis longus (IPJ)
Thumb movement and innervation: what muscle causes extension of the IPJ?
extensor pollicis longus (C7 and C8)
Thumb movement and innervation: what muscle causes extension of the MCPJ?
extensor pollicis brevis (C7 and C8)
Thumb movement and innervation: what muscle causes abduction?
abductor pollicis longus (C7 and C8)
Thumb movement and innervation: what muscle causes adduction?
adductor pollicis (C7 and C8)
DRAW THE BRACHIAL PLEXUS
good job
Nerve root: dorsal scapular nerve?
C5
Nerve root: suprascapular nerve?
C5 + C6
Nerve root: long thoracic nerve?
C5 + C6 + C7
