rib mvmt
- anterior rotation of the ribs in flexion
- posterior rotation in extension
Thoracic lateral flexion and rotation
• LF is limited by rib approximation
• can be hypomobility in a block of segments or at one or two
segments
Thoracic rotation
is the principal movement of the thoracic region
PPIVMs t4-12 rotation
Palpating finger feels for the downward movement of the spinous process
of the vertebra above on the spinous process below (which is
stabilised by the therapist’s finger)
Costo-transverse/costo-vertebral joints
- The unilaterals can be directed in a:
- cephalad direction (anterior rotation) - expiration
- caudad direction (posterior rotation) - inspiration
for upper ribs
position the patient with their hand behind
their back which will lift the scapula off the chest wall to
permit access to the ribs
SC PA hand positions
Pt in supine w/ pillow under head
thumb over the other, medial border of clavicle or medial end of ribs 2-6
first rib PA
pt in prone w/ head of bed
- PT thumb by side - push with thumbs in caudad direction
- lift bulk of trap and slide thumbs down into superiod border of 1st rib btwn traps and clavicle
