Pr. Casting Processes Flashcards
What is a closed mold?
A mold where the incoming material is limited/controlled by a gate which changes its rate etc.
Why are expendable molds named as such?
As often they are destroyed in the process of getting the cast component
What is Chorinov’s Rule?
Solidification Time = Mold Constant x (Volume of the cast/SA of the cast)^n (n normally = 2)
What component of a closed mold is used to mitigate shrinkage?
The riser. It has a higher solidification time so as to allow it to keep feeding molten material into the cast after said material has already somewhat solidified.
What material factor is used to reverse engineer the suitable size of a mold to counteract shrinkage?
The thermal expansion coefficient.
