Q

Jet propagation steps

A
  1. consider an air parcel entering a jet
  2. the parcel accelerates into the jet as PGF increases
  3. air is transported across the jet entrance
  4. which leads to areas of convergence and divergence aloft
  5. and the reverse happens at the jet exit
  6. remember Dines’ two layer model -> vertical motion
  7. Descending air warms adiabatically - ascending air cools adiabatically
  8. warming decrease temperature gradient at jet enterance -> jet weakens
  9. cooling increases temperature gradient at jet exit -> jet strengthens
