PPt Arthropod Behavior (Ex 5) Flashcards
1
Q
Hypothesize
A
- Provides a mechanistic explanation for why a set of observations is seen
- Broad, “Because”, Testable, Falsifiable
- A history of sports-related head injuries is associated with short-term memory loss in later life because of frequent injuries to the lambic system which is the seat of short-term memory
2
Q
Predict
A
- Describes what will occur to the variable being tested in an experiment
- Specific, Dependent Variable, “If”, Independent Variable
- If concussions are associated with damage to the limbic system, the MRIs of athletes with a history of concussions will reveal greater damage to the limbic system than a control group without these injuries
3
Q
Test
A
- A history of sports-related head injuries is associated with short-term memory loss in later life because of frequent injuries to the limbic system which is the seat of short-term memory
- What’s our null
4
Q
What do we need to keep in mind with experiments?
A
- Repeatable
- Replication
2.5 Strength of our data - Confounding variables
3.5 Control - Bias
4.5 Integrity of our data
5
Q
How do we analyze our data?
A
- Statistics!
- Synopsis of our data
2.5 Mean, range, min, max, standard deviation, variance, etc - Relate results back to our hypothesis
3.5 We never PROVE anything, We either support or fail to support our hypothesis, We either reject or fail to reject our null
6
Q
Arthropods
A
Invertebrates, with an exoskeleton and a segmented body
7
Q
Taxis
A
Movement in response to stimulus—do you move if stuff happens
8
Q
Kinesis
A
Rate of change in direction — how much you accelerate in response to a stimulus
9
Q
Madagascar hissing cockroaches
A
- Madagascar hissing cockroaches (Gromphadorhina portentosa) are not the same cockroaches you find in dirty buildings (Periplaneta americana)
- They groom themselves meticulously and are extremely hygienic
- They eat fruit and dog kibble, so think of them like very tiny puppies
10
Q
Armadillidium vulgare
A
- Armadillidium vulgare is known by many names: pill bug, potato bug, sow bug, Roxy-poly, etc
1.5 Vulgare is Latin for “common” not “gross”
Their name means “common little armadillo” - They’re actually crustaceans, not insects
