Q

What is a face-bow?

A

A caliper-like instrument used to record the spatial relationship of the maxillary arch to some anatomical reference point or points and then transfer the relationship to an articulator

Q

What are the 6 purposes of the face-bow transfer?

A
  1. Initial mounting of occlusal wax rim
  2. Lab remounting of finished denture
  3. Clinical remounting of finished denture
  4. Clinical mounting of initial preliminary dentulous treatment casts

Q

What are the 5 steps for locating the maxillary edentulous occlusal plane on the articulator?

A
  1. Record the maxillary occlusal plane
  2. Use the maxillary occlusion wax rims
  3. First use the fox plane
  4. Use the face-bow transfer
  5. Mount the casts on the articulator

14
Q

Why do we not take a bite registration on the bottom of the bite-fork of the face-bow transfer?

A

Because the thickness of the metal would throw things off.

16
Q

On which side should the stem of the bite fork be facing?

A

The left

17
Q

In which direction should the midline notch of the fork be facing?

A

UP!

18
Q

Is the take-one bite registration material prepared inside or outside the mouth?

A

Outside! Along with bite fork, temporary base-plate with occlusal wax tim and master cast all sitting on/with it

19
Q

What is “take 1”

A

a bite registration material

20
Q

Do you find the midline on the wax before or after adding the Take 1 registration paste?

A

Find the midline FIRST, the align the midline to the midline notch on the bite fork and hold into place using bite registration material….secure until set

21
Q

What are the steps for assembling and removing the face bow?

A
  1. Place bitefork in mouth and hold securely (utilize the patient)
  2. Add transfer jig (#1 and #2 FACE OPERATOR)
  3. Carefully place the ear-bow in the ears
  4. Line up the third point of reference indicator at a point 43 mm superior to the edge of the occlusal rim
  5. Tighten the transfer jig securely
  6. Remove total face bow
22
Q

Can the patient hold the bite fork?

A

Yes and No. They can hold it for you with their hand, but not with their mouth

23
Q

What is the procedure for securing occlusal rims to the edentulous bite fork?

A
  1. REcord patients midline
  2. Heat the bite fork over the bunsen burner and imbed it in the wax rim
  3. Cool the wax under cool running water
NOTE : there will be difficulty removing it
24
Q

Which direction do the numbers face on the transfer jig?

A

Face the operator

25
Q

How many people are needed to use the face bow

A

3 people….

  1. hold the inserted bite-fork in place
  2. To place the ear plugs
  3. To place and tighten the jig attachment
26
Q

Why do we mount the facebow in the ear?

A

The arbitrary hinge axis (ear hole) is the closest point to the true hinge axis (condyle)

27
Q

Which transfer jig clamp is located closest to the stick of the bitefork?

A

The #2

28
Q

What is a reference plane locator and where is it used?

A

A 43 mm ruler…used to measure up on the face (locate 3RD REFERENCE POINT) starting from the lower border of the edge of the maxillary occlusal rim

29
Q

What must you remove from the patient before using the facebow?

A

Any hearing aids

30
Q

How do you secure the slidematic face bow?

A
  1. Slide the shaft of the bite fork thru the #2 clamp
  2. Position the bow in the external auditory meatus
  3. Position the anterior pointer to the 3rd point of reference
  4. Tighten the #1 clamp facing the operator (DO NOT ALLOW PATIENT TO STABILIZE BITE FORK WITH THER BITE FORCES!)
31
Q

What should be documented in patients record after securing the face bow?

A

The intercodylar distance

32
Q

After completing the facebow assembly and measuring the intercondylar distance, what is the next step?

A

Remove facebow from patient’s face and then remove bite fork from facebow by loosening the screw holding them together

33
Q

What do you do with a Denar mounting adapter marked with an H (aka Denar transfer mounting part)

A

Mount onto lower member of the articulator, the the face bow transfer jig is placed into the mounting jig and the set screw is tightened to fix it in place

34
Q

Does the facebow get mounted to the articulator?

A

NOPE!
