PPL Flashcards
What 3 systems does the exhaust provide heat for?
1 - Cabin Heat
2 - Carb Heat
3 - Windscreen Heat
What is a risk of using the exhaust for cabin heat?
Carbon monoxide poisoning if the exhaust is cracked.
What does a supercharger/Turbocharger do?
It compresses intake air to try and replicate sea level pressure to improve performance.
What is the difference between a supercharger and turbo charger?
A supercharger is belt driven from the engine and a turbo is powered with exhaust gas.
How does the engine starter work?
When the key is turned the start engages the flywheel and spins the propeller.
Why is a propeller blade angled different at the tip vs the hub?
The tip of the propeller must spin faster to compete 1 rotation in the same time as the hub. The faster spinning tip will produce more lift, so it is angled shallower to ensure even thrust across the blade.
If the alternator fails, usually how long will the battery last for?
30 mins, if the battery is healthy.
What does the Ammeter show?
If the battery is being charged or discharged.
What are the 4 types of lights on the aircraft?
1 - Landing Lights
2 - Beacon Lights
3 - Strobe/Anti Collision
4 - Navigation Lights
What colour is the Landing light?
White and Solid
What colour is the beacon light?
Red and flashing
What colour is the strobe light?
White and fast flashing.
What colour are the Navigation lights?
Right Wing - Green
Left Wing - Red
Tail - White
You see a solid green, solid red and flashing red light. What direction is the aircraft heading?
Towards you.
How would you tell is the alternator had failed?
Either Alternator warning light or Ammeter would show a constant discharge.
What 3 Systems are hydraulically controlled?
1 - Brakes
2 - Landing Gear
3 - Prop Governor
When does the FAA recommend supplemental Oxygen?
Above 10,000ft during the day
Above 5,000ft during night
When are crew required to use oxygen?
Between 12,500-14,000 feet for more than 30 Mins
Anytime above 14,000ft
When must passengers be provided oxygen?
Above 15,000feet.
What is De-Icing vs Anti Icing?
De-Icing is the removal of built up ice
Anti-Icing is the prevention of ice
How does an ELT activate?
Either automatically in an impact or manually with a switch.
What frequency does the ELT transmit on?
121.5
When must an ELT be inspected?
Every 12 calendar months.
Your ELT was last inspected May 4th 2020 when is it due next?
May 31st 3021
