Why is public protection relevant to us as medical students?
A
- Regular undergraduate clinical contact
- Preparation for Years 4 and 5 – rotating through specialties and GP.
- As observers of consultations you may notice signs or symptoms of abuse.
- Awareness that domestic abuse is a possibility

What is gender based violence?
A
Violence that is directed against a woman because she is a woman, or that affects women disproportionately. It includes acts that inflict physical, mental or sexual harm or suffering, threats of such acts, coercion and other deprivations of liberty.

Epidemiology of gender based violence:
A
- Common public health issue in UK(1 in 4 women and 1in 5 men lifetime risk) and worldwide
- Most doctors will see more patients suffering from the effects of gender based violence or child abuse than from other conditions
