Why is public protection relevant to us as medical students?

A
  • Regular undergraduate clinical contact
  • Preparation for Years 4 and 5 – rotating through specialties and GP.
  • As observers of consultations you may notice signs or symptoms of abuse.
  • Awareness that domestic abuse is a possibility

What is gender based violence?

A

Violence that is directed against a woman because she is a woman, or that affects women disproportionately. It includes acts that inflict physical, mental or sexual harm or suffering, threats of such acts, coercion and other deprivations of liberty.

A
  • Common public health issue in UK(1 in 4 women and 1in 5 men lifetime risk) and worldwide
  • Most doctors will see more patients suffering from the effects of gender based violence or child abuse than from other conditions
