What three points make an adult an adult at risk?
“Adults at risk” are adults (over the age of 16) who –
a) are unable to safeguard their own well-being, property, rights or other interests;
b) are at risk of harm; and
because they are affected by disability, mental disorder, illness or physical or mental infirmity, are more vulnerable to being harmed than adults who are not so affected
How can victims of abuse be protected?
The Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998protects individuals making disclosures that ‘tend to show’ that the health or safety of a person is or may be endangered. These are ‘protected disclosures’
What is honour based crime?
Honour based violence’ is a crime or incident, which has or may have been committed to protect or defend the honour of the family and/or community’. ‘Honour’ based violence is normally a collective and planned crime or incident, mainly perpetrated against women and girls, by their family or their community, who act to defend their perceived honour, because they believe that the victim(s) have done something to bring shame to the family or the community.
It can take many forms including: ‘honour’ killing, forced marriage, rape, forced suicide, acid attacks, mutilation, imprisonment, beatings, death threats, blackmail, emotional abuse, surveillance, harassment, forced abortion and abduction.
What is the process if it is thought that there is an adult at risk being abused?
Is the person in immediate danger/in need of urgent medical assistance
You must report to your supervisor and it will then be progressed by the relevant Adult Protection Network

What is the partnership coordination unit?
The PCU are responsible for supporting divisional Officers by ensuring victim safety plans are in place and relevant for all victims.
In addition the Unit coordinates a multi-agency response to address risk and prevent escalation.
What actions does the domestic abuse act 2018 cover?
Making a victim dependent on or subordinate to perpetrator
Isolating the victim from friends, relatives or sources of support
Controlling, regulating or monitoring victim’s day-to-day activities
Depriving the victim or restricting their freedom of action
Frightening, humiliating, degrading or punishing the victim
What is intimate terrorism?
A pattern of coercive control Induces fear Continues after separation Typically perpetrated by men Linked with homicides Escalates over time Produces a negative impact on victim’s ability to act independently and in own interest
What is situational couple violence?
Situation based
No underlying dynamic of control and domination
Perpetrated by both genders
Violence can be severe
Frequent or infrequent
Partners do not live in fear of each other
Consequences for men and women can be dramatically different
What is violent resistance?
Victim fights in self-defence (could be physically or verbally)
Might act in revenge or retaliation
Might fight in self-preservation (e.g. when victims kill their abuser)
Victim does not seek power & control
