Poylmers, Wood, Metals And Composites Flashcards
Metals - Non-Ferrous (doesn’t contain iron)
Aluminium: Ductile, lightweight, malleable, corrosion resistant
Uses - Drinks cans, aircraft bodies, baking foil
Copper: Ductile, tough, malleable, corrosion resistant, good thermal and electrical conductor
Uses - Electrical wire, central heating pipes, hot water tanks
Metals - Ferrous (Contains iron)
Low carbon steel: Ductile, High tensile strength, malleable, poor corrosion resistance
Uses - Nuts, Bolts and car bodies
Cast iron: Good under compression, hard outer skin but brittle core
Uses - Machine parts, disc brakes
Metals - Ferrous alloys
Stainless steel: Tough, hard, corrosion resistant
Uses - Sinks, kitchenware (cutlery)
High speed steel: Hard, tough, high level of resistance to frictional heat
Uses - Tool blades, drill bits and milling cutters.
Metals - Non -ferrous alloys
Bronze: Tough, corrosion resistant can be cast
Uses - Statues and coins
Brass: Corrosion resistant, good electrical and thermal conductor, low melting point and casts well
Uses - Boats fittings and ornaments
Metals - Stock forms
- Sheet
- Bar
- Rod
- Tube
Polymers Forming
Made during fractional distillation of crude oil which produces fractions containing a mixture of hydrocarbons (1).
