Pox virus Flashcards
Poxvirus characteristics
Has 3 important iruses: smallpox, vaccinia and malluscum contagisum virus.
- largest and most complex virus
- linear DsDNA with disk shaped core.
- contain DNAdepRNA polymearse
Transmission of Poxvirus
transmitted via respiratory aerosols
direct contact with skin lesions
or fomites like bedding
Pathogensis of smallpox
small pox infects upper respirator tract and local lymph nodes and enter bloods then internal organs are infected and then to blood then to skin
what causes teh rash of pox virus
the rash is resuklt of virus replication and damage mediated by Tc cells
clinical findings of small pox
incubation period of 1 to 2 weeks
sudden onset of prodromal symptoms then rahs on face and exermities
rash progression of small pox
macule-papule-vesicle and crusts in 2 to 3 weeks
prevention of small pox
vaccination as it has only 1 serotype and no animla reservoir and antibody response is strong and easily recongized and no subclinical infection
vaccines of Small pox
vaccinia immune globulins (VIG) is high titter ab agianst vaccinia used to treat complication of vaccination.
mulluscum contagiosum virus
member of poxvirus famiy and causes lesions
lesions charchteristics of MCV
small diameter, flesh colored papule on skin or mucus membrane, painless nonpruritic and notinflammed and cup shaped crater with white core composed of hyperplastic epithelial cells with cytoplasmic inclusions
transmssion of MCV
by personal contact
sexually
