Alliteration
**repetition **of the initial consonants of words.
Free Verse
a poem without predictable rhyme, rhythm, or length of line or stanza.
Hyperbole: excessive exaggeration to make a point
Imagery:
the use of vivid words that appeal to the reader’s senses of sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch
Metaphor:
a comparison of two dissimilar things that implies some sort of equality between the things
Onomatopoeia
a word that makes the sound of the action it describes
Personification
a comparison that gives human qualities to inanimate objects
Rhyme scheme
the pattern of the end rhymes in a poem
Simile
a comparison of two dissimilar things that uses “like” or “as”
Speaker:
the narrator of a poem
Stanza:
a group of lines of poetry, usually similar in length and pattern
Symbol
something in a poem that stands for something larger than itself
