What are the powers of the police?
A
- stop and search
- arrest
- move on people
- search your house
- be detained

Why do they stop and search?
A
- In case they think you have committed or witnessed a crime or offence
- believe you are a terrorist
- or to prevent an act of terrorism.

Why do they arrest people?
A
- In case you have committed a crime or have a link to a crime.
- for example if you have possession of a knife.

Why do they move on people?
A
- if there has been a complaint about your behaviour.
- if they have witnessed unruly behaviour which could cause a complaint.

Why do they search your house?
A
- if they think your are in possession of drugs, firearms or stolen property.
- if they have a warrant they will let your read it.

Why do they detain people?
A
- in case they suspect you have committed a crime or offence punishable by imprisonment.
- they can detain you for up to 12 hours.
