Impact driver + Caution
Things to watch out for:
Impact drivers do not have a clutch, so it is easy to over drive a fastener, especially into soft material.
Make sure the tool is straight into the fastener, so the fastener head does not get damaged.
Use hardened driver bits designed to cope with the pounding they will get from impact tools.
Oscillating saw (multi-tool) + Caution
Things to watch out for:
When starting the cut, as the blade is oscillating the blade can cut further out than you want. Starting in the middle of the cut will help avoid this.
The tool can jump if you are not careful, especially when plunge cutting. To prevent unwanted damage to the surrounding area, hold the tool firmly and move the blade very slowly into the material being cut.
If there are nails in the timber, choose a combination wood/nail cutting blade - a wood cutting blade will not cope with cutting nails.
Reciprocating saw (sabre saw) + Caution
Things to watch out for:
Look for pipes and cables.
Reciprocating saws are prone to kick back:
If the blade jams or the tip hits something, the saw body will jump aggressively; always have a firm grip on the saw and make sure the tip is clear of obstacles. Use a wedge to keep the saw cut open if necessary.
If using a plug in reciprocating saw, keep the power cord out of the way of the blade.
Blades can bend if they are treated roughly. If a blade becomes bent, straighten it, but remember a blade that has been cutting will be very hot.
Choose a combination wood/nail cutting blade if you are cutting timber with nails in it. Standard blades will be destroyed quickly if you hit a nail.
Angle grinder + Caution
Things to watch out for:
Kickback, especially avoid grinding towards a sharp edge.
Don’t use a disc that is damaged; it may catch and fly to pieces.
Stop the grinding sparks from hitting important surfaces, including windows, where they might cause damage.
Clean up all the grinding dust, especially if cutting steel, because when it gets damp, it rusts.
Do not breathe the grinding dust.
Circular saw (skill saw) + Caution
Things to watch out for:
Unplug the saw or remove the battery when changing blades.
Only have your finger on the trigger when you are ready to cut.
Have the blade at full speed before starting a cut; reduced speed increases the risk of the teeth catching instead of cutting and this can cause violent kickback.
Keep the cord away from the blade.
Mitre saw (Drop saw) + Caution
Things to watch out for:
The nature of mitre saws generally means your off-hand is quite close to the saw blade when it is cutting. You need to make sure your hand is not too close to the blade, at least 150mm away.
Bent timber, or anything sticking out that prevents a good fit of the timber to the fence. The timber needs to be stable and not able to move or twist when being cut.
