The ability to carry out a desired outcome, or the ability to influence others in carrying out a desired outcome.
Power
This type of power compels others to act using force or violence.
Coercive power
This type of power compels others to act by promising a reward. The reward may be provided before or after the task is completed.
Reward power
This type of power stems from extensive knowledge on a topic.
Expert power
This type of power is based on societal roles, status, and positions. It involves social hierarchies.
Legitimate power
This type of power is the ability to attract and gain followers. People with this power are often charismatic and influential.
Referent power
This type of authority is based on an individual or institution’s personality and traits. It usually involves sharing an ideal with others.
Charismatic authority
This type of authority is based on cultural and traditional customs. Power is passed down through long-standing customs, beliefs, and traditions. It is often hereditary.
Traditional authority
This type of authority is based on laws and regulations. It depends on government-enacted laws, constitutions, and policies.
Legal-rational authority
How do we know someone’s authority is legitimate?

These government powers are accorded by the constitution. They cannot be taken away as long as the state exists.
Inherent powers
This is the government’s ability to use the police to maintain peace and order.
Police power
This enables the government to obtain private property for public use. It is often used for infrastructure and restructuring programs.
Eminent domain
This is the government’s ability to impose taxes on its constituents. This provides revenue for future projects.
Taxation
These powers enables a country to achieve its goals over other states or its own state.
National powers
This is the government’s ability to use military forces to protect its people, territory, and interests. It can be used to invade other states.
Military power
This enables the government to use its resources and influence how other states use their resources. These resources include wealth and labor.
Economic power
This power allows the government to change how others perceive it, which includes controlling information to shape public perception.
Psychological power
This refers to a state’s ability to use its image or reputation to influence others. It uses diplomacy and cultural influence rather than coercion.
Soft power
These powers are granted to the people legally. It is given by documents like a constitution or laws.
Formal powers
This is a vote on whether to approve or reject a change in the constitution.
Plebiscite
This is the right to vote and run for office. It is outlined in Article V of the 1987 Constitution.
Suffrage
This allows the people to approve or reject legislation through an election. The results either ratify or reject a law.
Referendum
This allows people to propose constitutional amendments or enact legislation through an election.
