What is reward power?
the ability to influence based on the others belief that the influencer has access to valued rewards which will be dispensed in return for compliance
What is coercive power?
the ability to exert influence through the other belief that the influencer can administer punishments or sanctions
What is Referent power?
the ability to exert influence based on the others belief that the influencer has desirable abilities and personality traits that should be copied
What is legimate power?
the ability to exert influence based on the belief that the influencer has authority in which they must accept
what is expert power?
The ability to exert influence through the use of expert knowledge of subject that is relevant to the task or project
What is strategic contingency theory?
an arguement that states that the most powerful individuals and departments are those that are best able to deal effectively with the issues that are most critical to an orgs success.
What are the five factors that increase power according to the strategic contingency theory?
Dependency creation: powerful if other people/departments rely on them for materials, information etc
Financial resources: control over financial resources increases power
The centrality of activities: the degree to which the department or person is critical to achieving the orgs goals
Non-substituability: where work cannot be done by anyone else a department/ person is more powerful
Uncertainty reduction: those that can decrease the risk and uncertainty of a situation can gain more influence
