Positions of power decide correct and appropriate in the workplace. Determined the extent their power is overtly used over employees.

Power in the workplace, increasingly used in a covert way. Repressive power that aims to achieve goodwill from employees.
Janet Holmes, Small Talk
Used to manage or influence the behaviours or others. Some small talk is good for relationships but not good if it takes over work talk.

Employees like small talk but employers prefer non personal topics and to limit small talk.
Brown and Levinson, Face
Positive Face: bond with others, feel valued.
Negative Face: keep a level of distance and respect between yourself and others.
PFTA: ignore a person, insult someone
NFTA: interrupt someone, suggest incorrect expression

Members of common community share common goals and a common discourse. Can be a more rapid way of communicating.

Occupational language is culturally specific, miscommunications down to unhelpful abbreviations.
Daily Mail Article, Doctor Slang
Allows doctors to talk about their patients in front of them. Eg. GLM for good looking mum. Can be seen as exclusionary.

Receptionists and hairdressers work in a more relaxed environment and therefore use more Q+A structures. Maintains minimum level of politeness and helps situation remain non emotive.
