Define authority
Authority is a special form of power in the sense that it gives people the right to give command which others accept as legitimate
What is coercive power?
Based on the subordinates fear of the leader- normally maintained by the use of threats and punishment
What is reward power?
Providing rewards as a form of power- encourages good performance through incentives rather than threats E.g -Increased pay -Promotion -Praise
What is expert power?
Possession of a particular skill, expertise and knowledge
E.g
-Lawyers
-Chief Executives
What is legitimate power?
Power deriving from a person’s position or job in an organisation
This means that it increases as you go up in an organisations hierarchy
What is referent power?
Derives from a leader's charisma The characteristics of a person with referent power are: -Charismatic -Likeable -Good interpersonal skills
Define power
Power exists when one person can get another person to do something that otherwise they would not want to do
