This powerful rhyming couplet creates a dark and menacing tone. It allows the audience to see a weakness in Othello, being that he has no control or power over Desdemona. Thus making Othello prove to himself that he is still in control by lashing out on Desdemona and eventually killing her

All power lost by Desdemona is given to Amelia.

Whilst Othello completely overpowers Desdemona when he murders her, Amelia begins to assert some level of authority upon her friends death. Amelia is told to go home by Iago which she replies “I will not”. The short sentence and assertive tone highlights the fact that she is beginning to stand up to men and assert a degree of power despite her gender
