Powder Coating Flashcards
What are the 6 primary categories of powder coatings?
Standard Polyesters Super Durable Polyesters (SMP) Epoxy Urethane Epoxy-Polyester Hybrid (or Hybrid generally) Fluoropolymers (PVDF & FEVE)
What are the 3 advantages and 2 disadvantages of Fluoropolymers?
EX: PVDF, FEVE
Extremely weatherproof (50 years)
1- Beautiful aesthetics
2- Corrosion and humidity resistant
3- Easy to apply with resin-rich constitution
Disadvantages
1- Higher Cost
2- Applicators must be registered by the large suppliers who warranty the product
What are the applications of Fluoropolymers?
Anywhere long term weathering is required
Ouutdoor curtain walls
Building facades
What are the 2 advantages and 1 major disadvantages of Epoxy-Polyester Hybrids (more generally known as Hybrids)
Advantages
1- More economical in pricing than pure Epoxy
2- Adding polyester can help with smoothness at thin application levels, cosmetic appeal with thin films
Disadvantages
1- Reduced corrosion/technical resistance vs. straight epoxy but doesn’t add much weather proofing vs. straight epoxy
What are the applications of the Epoxy-Polyester Hybrids?
Indoor appliances, furniture, shelving, power tools, stoves, washers.
Whare are the 3 advantages and 2 disadvantages of Urethane?
Advantages
1- Very smooth, great gloss
2- Excellent exterior durability
3- Excellent corrosion resistance
Disadvantages
1- Cost
2- Can outgas and become brittle at higher thicknesses
What are applications of Urethane?
Feul tanks
Appliances
Wheel rims
Door knobs
(less common)
What are the 5 advantages and 1 disadvantage of Epoxy?
Advantages
1- Excellent chemical and corrosion resistance
2- Very durable
3- Great adhesion properties
4- Easy to use, wide range of cure schedules
5- Excellent hardness
Disadvantages
1- Poor weathering. Used as first coat for exterior applications
What are applications for Epoxy?
Top coat (primers) for outdoor applications Exterior HVAC or heavy machinery first coat
What are the differences between TGIC and TGIC Free Powder coating?
TGIC Free is better because holds electrostatic charge better than TGIC powder coating technology, providing more consistent batch to batch finish with more even film across the part and less work required to coat more intricate parts.
TGIC Free is worse because it is more sensitive to excess film thickness and more sensitive to overbake
What are the 3 advantages and 3 disadvantages of super durable polyester?
EX: Silicone Modified Polyester (SMP)
Advantages
1- Meets or exceeds AAMA 2604
2- 5-10 year color and gloss retention (some applicators give 10 yr warranty on aluminum)
3- STGIC, TGIC Free options
Disadvantages
1- Slightly lower impact resistance
2- Less options for fast cure
3- Slightly more expensive
What are the applications of super durable polyesters?
Exterior applications, commercial store fronts, windows, doors, exterior furniture, fencing, farm equipment.
What are the 5 advantages and 1 disadvantage of standard polyester?
Advantages 1- Enormous color options 2- Great value for the money 3- Good chemical resistance 4- Most will meet AAMA 2603 5- Some include TGIC, TGIC Free options
Disadvantages
1- Lower weather capability (1-3 years retaining color and gloss in exterior weather)
What are the 5 primary reasons powder coating is better than painting?
1- Scratch resistance 2- Hardness 3- Uniform film integrity 4- Most applications are single coat (steel exception with 2 coats) 5- No VOC's, hazardous solvents
What is the difference between powder coating and painting?
Powder coating - Particals are electrostatically charged and then uniformly adhere to a surface, and then are baked to melt and gloss the finish.
Painting - Liquid paint including resin, pigment, and solvent. Paint applied, solvent dries up leaving resin and pigment.
(solvent used to thin the rest for application)
