The poor in history
Old English Poor Laws- These were late medival tudor laws 1500s, the idea was that people in poverty could receive outdoor relief. Poverty was a nuisance
Punitive View of Poverty: a nuisance to society- People were called drunken and sinful

Robert Owen was the founder of socialism.
He improved the working conditions of his factory workers and his promotion of experimental socialistic communities.
Helped create the New Poor Law 1837

London riots- around a culture of poverty and a sense of entitlement. Realted to ethnicity and stop and searches.
Three theories of deprivation
- Culture of poverty
Problems arising from internal pathology of deviant groups. Eg. worklessness is passed through generations - Institutional malfunctioning
Problems arising from failures of planning, management or administration of services.
- Maldistribution of resources and opportunities. Problems arising from an inequiable distribution of resources. A source of structual class conflict and inequality.
Peter Townsend views of poverty
1979 ‘ when people lack the resources to participate in the activities and have the living conditions and amenities which are customary, or are at least widely encouraged or approved, in the societies to which they belong.
Characteristics of absolute poverty
Clean water Sanitation Shelter Clothing Food Health
In the UK the Government defines ‘absolute poverty’ in comparisaon to the median in 2010/11.

- Exploitation
The act of using peoples labours to produce profit while not compensating them fairly. - Marginalisation
Is the act of relegating or confining a group of people to a lower social standing or outer limit or edge of society. - Violence is the intention to damage, humiliate or destroy a person or group.
- Cultural imperialism Involves taking the culture of the ruling class and establishing it as the norm, thus controlling how the people in that society interpret and communicate
- Powerlessness
Is the lack of authority, status and sense of self which would permit a persona to be listened to with respect
