What is poverty?
The lack of basic needs is called poverty.
Who is poor?
A person with less income then the poverty line is poor.
Poorest states?
Orissa and Bihar
Reason for poverty in India?
- Rule of Britishers and their bad policies, leading to no development.
- Unequal distribution of land and resources.
- Many policies but bad implementation.
- Small farmers take loans from big farmers and then are unable to repay it.
- High population, less jobs.
Steps taken by government to reduce poverty?
-Prime minister Rozgar yojana (1993)
- Rural employment program (1995)
- Swarnajayanti gram Swarozgar yojana (1999)
- National Rural Employment guarantee act (2005)

Helps educated people in rural areas to start their own business.

Helps people to start their own small business in villages and small cities.
Swarnajayanti gram Swarozgar yojana (1999)
Lifts people out of poverty by providing subsidy and cheap loans.
National rural employment guarantee act (2005)
- Gov provides 100 days of employment to people.
- 1/3rd of jobs are reserved for women.
- If gov fails to provide employment within 15 days, the person is eligible for daily unemployment allowance
