POV Review Chemical Hazards Flashcards
Protection methods against hazardous chemicals are called?
Controls
Who/what must be protected against hazardous chemicals?
1) Yourself
2) Equipment
3) Envirnment
4) Public
Who is responsible to protect against hazardous chemical release or exposure?
The operator
What types of controls are there?
1) administrative like permit
2) engineering like ventalation
Controls can also be to wear PPE.
Where can the SDS be located?
Through HSE Data anagement Department located On a local PC in Electronic Document Management System (EDMS)
SDS meet the requirements for providing hazardous chemical info, including?
1) Toxicity
2) Permissible exposure limits (PEL)
3) Physical data
4) reactivity data
5) Corrosivity data
6) Thermal & Chemical stability data
7) Hazardous effects of the inadvertent mixing of different materials the could foreseably occur
What are control measures that apply to all hazardous materials?
1) Wear proper PPE
2) In addition to refinery wide PPE check SDS for additional PPE requirement
3) Avoid contact with skin or eyes,
4) Don’t breath in mist or vapors,
5) Don’t attempt to ID substance by taste or smell.
6) Know the location of the nearest eye wash and safety shower.
7) use materials under well ventilated conditions.
8) All chemicals must have proper container, HFR labels, and proper containment areas.
9) If the conditions appear unsafe THEY ARE. Error on the side of safety.
How or where should you store chemicals?
1) Dry, cool and well ventilated place.
2) Isolate combustible from ignition source
3) minimize quantities on hand
4) keep containers closed when not in use.
