Pot Flashcards

1
Q

“sold to the gentleman in the grey hat”

A

Emblematic (symbolic) of the quintessential (typical) English gentleman, a symbol of wealth, power and privilege. It is satirical
and angry, and ironically suggests that the pot which metaphorically represents the people, have no say over the choices made on their behalf.

Q

“slipped onto the white sailing yacht”

A

Implies wealth and status, ‘white’ signifying innocence but also the deceptive purity of the British Empire, and ‘slipped’ implying a supposed accident, suggesting that wealthy countries hide or manipulate the masses into thinking they did not commit nefarious crimes, they distort the truth to understate their responsibility.

Q

“Empty pot, growl if you
hear me”

A

‘empty’ suggests that those who take such things from their origins do not use them properly. A pot is meant to store grain or sand, but stands empty and useless in a museum just to be looked at, removing the utility. A vapid emptiness. A lifeless relic, devoid of connection to its culture. This criticises colonisers who take without
understanding.
