Posture Flashcards
Posture starts with the…
Pelvis
Anterior and posterior pelvic tilt
Types of posture
Posture is usually assessed with a
plumb line
In standing with lateral view
- Through the
Ear
Head of humerus
Mid elbow
Greater trochanter
Mid knee
Lateral malleolus
Excessive cervical lordosis
Tightness of cervical extensors
Tightness of levator scapuli or traps
If posture is off at the shoulder
weakness, tightness of anterior muscles
If posture is off in the thoracic area would it be kyphosis or lordosis?
kypohsis
If off in the lumbar region
Anterior pelvic tilt (sway back)
Tightness of posterior longitudinal ligament and back ext and hip flexors
Stretched ALL
- Flat back
* Posterior pelvic tilt
* Tightness of hamstrings
* Stretched PLL
Genu recurvatum
knee is hyperextended
Tight quads
Stretched hamstrings
Shape of tibial plateau
What do you look for with a posterior view
Looking for symmetrical sides
Head and Neck
- Tight lateral flexors-ipsislateral
- Stretched lateral flexors -contralateral
- Compressed vertebra-ispilateral
Shoulder and scapula
- One shoulder is lower
* Tight rhomboids and lats
* Hand dominance (dominant shoulder lower)
- One shoulder higher
* Tightness in upper traps
* Scoliosis
Trunk
- Scoliosis
Hip and Pelvis
- Scoliosis
- Leg length
- Muscle tightness (abductors, medial rotators)
- Trendelenburg Sign
What do you look for with a anterior view
Very similar to the Posterior view for most
Mandibular asymmetry
Upper and lower teeth are not aligned and deviate to side
Cubital Varus (a)
Medial deviation l
Less than 15º for woman bc hip width
10º men
Cubitus Valgus (b)
Also called the
Carrying angle
Lateral deviation
Should be 10º in men
15º in women
Hip
- Lateral(ext) rotation-patellae angles out
- Medial (int) rotation- patellae angles in
* Tendency toward W sit; stable position but not mobile
* Reasons: goofy kid, orthopedic torsion issue at the hips causing medial rotation, sensory disturbance without good posture control and needs a wide base of support
* Could lead to medial rotation and stretch hips and limits mobility and opportunity for activity
Knee
- External Tibial torsion (lateral torsion)
* Distal end of tibia is rotated laterally
(more than 25 degrees)
* Creates toeing out
- Internal Tibial Torsion
*Toeing in
*“Pigeon toed”
Genu Valgum
Patella points inward
“knock kneed”
Genu Varum
Patella point outward
“Bow legged”
Anterior view of ankle
Hallux Valgus- laterel deviation of big toe
Hammer toe-hyperext of the mtp
and dip, flexion pip
Pes cavus-high arch
Often associated with hammer
Toe (claw)
Pes planus-flat footed
Posture in sitting
Ergonomic chairs
Ergonomic desks
Ergonomic keyboards
Poor posture is a habit, just like good posture
90º of flexion at hip, ankle, and knee
Elbows should not hike shoulders
Wrists should be straight or slightly extended 10-20º
Winging of scapula
Typically serratus anterior
