What are the signs and symptoms of postpartum haemorrhage?
1) Sudden and profuse blood loss or persistent increased blood loss
2) Faintness
3) Dizziness
4) Palpitations/tachycardia
What are the signs and symptoms of postpartum infection?
1) Fever
2) Shivering
3) Abdominal pain
4) Offensive vaginal loss
What are the signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia?
1) Headaches
2) Visual disturbances
3) Nausea and vomiting
How do you diagnose pre-eclampsia/eclampsia?
Headaches accompanied by one or more of the following symptoms within the first 72h of birth:
- Visual disturbances
- Nausea and vomiting
What are the signs and symptoms of postpartum thromboembolism?
1) Unilateral calf pain, redness or swelling (DVT)
2) Shortness of breath
3) Chest pain
When does PPH occur?
1) Primary PPH - first 24-48h post birth is when it is particularly problematic
2) Secondary PPH - can happen much later
What indicates infection of a perineal wound or C section scar?
If it is very red and tender
How can pre-eclampsia/eclampsia occur postnatally?
- Pre-eclampsia/eclampsia can occur postnatally with no antenatal or intrapartum episode - normotensive throughout
- Can cause death (pre-) eclampsic fit
What physiological changes occur in the uterus?
1) Involution - process by which the uterus is transformed from pregnant to non-pregnant state
2) Lochia
What physiological changes occur in the perineum?
Stretch, trauma
What physiological changes occur in the breasts?
Lactation
What physiological changes occur in the abdomen?
Stretch, C section scar
