What do you do if a woman has a prolapse cervix?
Reglove and gently push the cervix back up to its usual position. Instruct the woman to stay in bed as much as possible and to begin exercising the pelvic muscles.
Are warm compresses useful to help prevent mastitis?
Yes, they can stimulate the flow of milk preventing it from backing up and becoming infected.
What can you use beside warm water for your compress?
Steamed, fresh comfrey leaves
Strong tea
Can raw cabbage leaves be used to help prevent mastitis?
Yes, who raw cabbage leaves(which steam on the breast) may also be used and should be left until they soften.
What can stimulate milk production?
Hops tincture
Fennel/Barley water
How do you dry up milk supply?
Bind breasts w/ long stretchy wrap
Cold compresses
Sage tea
Pokeroot tincture
Where should the fundus be at day 1 postpartum?
Just below the umbilicus and should feel firm, not tender.
What should bleeding look like 1 day postpartum?
Red-brown flow in amounts like a heavy menstrual period.
When does hypoglycemia need referral?
If there is a high-pitched, catlike wail, do a heel stick glucose level. If in conjunction with jaundice, refer immediately.
What should bleeding look like by day 3 postpartum?
A bit lighter than before, beginning to change from brown/red(lochia rubra) to pink(lochia serosa).
What temperate is WNL for mother when milk comes in?
101 degrees is normal but continue to rule out other signs of infection.
What is normal blood sugar levels for a newborn?
50-60mg/mL is normal.
Anything below 30 is of serious concern.
What are the symptoms of hypoglycemia?
Lethargy
Irregular respirations
Inability to regulate body temp
Refuse to nurse
Irritability(high pitched cry)
Tremors
Jaundice and ABO incompatibility.
What blood type?
Jaundice can be caused by ABO incompatibility, which occurs when a mother has type O blood and her baby is type A, B, or AB.
What are other names for uterine infection?
Puerperal infection
Endometritis
