Postmodernists Flashcards
What do postmodernist argue
We have moved into a new set of economic and social circumstances. A key feature of this is the challenge of globalisation to the nation state which refers to the interconnectedness of people across national boundaries
4 related changes to increase globalisation
One strength is that it recognises significant developmengt : sTechnological changes( satellite and internet ) , economic changes ( 24 hr electronic transactions ) political ( TNCs and consumers have more power than governments , changes in culture and identity ( cultures are no longer exclusive from one another
Martel
Observed that for individuals both geographical distance and time zones are no longer important due to technology
Baudrillard
Postmodern societies are hyper-real societies whcih have become dominated by signs of reality
Late modernity
Argue that society now is an exaggeration of what was going on before
Marxists
Argue that capitalism has engaged in global practices such as colonialism and Harvey develops a Marxist analysis that capitalists have sought new sources of profit through new areas of commerce
Pluralism- crook et al
Another strength of the postmodernists is in explaining how pluralism in the sources of information available to people contributes to identity formation
Especially the role of the media is producing ever changing images and versions of the truth that individuals can choose from. Instead of a Fixed identity like class, we can change our identity by changing our consumption patterns and selecting media produced images by which to define ourselves
Lyotard
Knowledge is just a seres of different ‘language games’ whcih are just someone’s version of realty not the Truth
Transition to a post modern culture involves changes in language games as they are no longer given by narrators who had status in that group
Postmodern society is based on…
Technical language games which aren’t judged by standards of truth but based on saleable useful knowledge
Fails to explain what
How important features of society such as media and consumption came about and how free we are to construct our identities maybe be limited
Structural analysis
Remains essential because it ignores power and inequality
David Harvey - Marxist
Society has moved to postmodernity however we cannot understand this era without knowing its relationship to capitalism e.g media is owned by those who sell culture as a commodity and can manipulate representations to enhance capitalist idealogy
