- explores both positive and negative effects (positive being it unites different cultures to bring about cultural hybridity, negative effects could be organisations surveillance and monitoring our behaviour e.g. shopping habits)
- pick and mix identities, whereby people can an choose how to press themselves online, supported by feminists as they give women opportunity to voice their opinions

- often fail to recognise digital divide (inequalities in access to technology) e.g. the poor or old dont have access to the internet
- dont consider cyber crime e.g. hacking and cat fishing

- Foucault argues that surveillance is likely to become the most effective means of regulating behaviour and reducing crime in modern society
- people are controlled as their information is being collected e.g. cookies. Organisations use this to monitoring behaviour and collecting information e.g. shopping habits to enhance profits
