Posterior thigh and popliteal fossa Flashcards
Cutaneous innervation of posterior thigh
Lateral side of posterior region to proximal knee = lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh
Medial aspect of posterior thigh, and popliteal as well as proximal posterior leg = Posterior cutaneous nerve of thigh.
Medial thigh of posterior thigh is Posterior cutaneous nerve but anterior aspect of medial thigh = obturator nerve and femoral nerve.
Cutaneous innervation of posterior leg
Lateral proximal half = Common fibular nerve
Distal lateral half and lateral foot = Tibial nerve (sural)
Medial leg and medial foot = Femoral nerve (saphenous nerve branch)
Heel of foot = Tibial nerve.
Semi membranous
O - Ischial tuberosity
I - Medical condyle of tibia, posterior
N - Tibia branch of sciatic nerve
A - Profunda femoris a or popliteal in inferior part of hamstring
F - extend hip joint, flex knee joint and medial rotator of tibia in walking
*gives raise to oblique popliteal ligament and fascia that covers the poplitealus muscles
Semitendenous
O - Ischial tuberosity
I - Pes anersinus. under gracilis
N - Tibia branch of sciatic nerve
A -Profunda femoris a or popliteal in inferior part of hamstring
F - extend hip joint, flex knee joint and medial rotator of tibia in walking
Path - on top of Semi membranous
Biceps femoris
O - 1 - Ischial tuberosity, 2- Lateral lip of linea aspersa and supracondyle line
I - head of fibula
N - Tibia branch of sciatic nerve, short head is by common fibula nerve
A- Profunda femoris a or popliteal in inferior part of hamstring
F - extend hip joint, flex knee joint and lateral rotator of tibia in walking
Hamstrings
Semimembranous
Semitendinous
Biceps femoris
Hamstring part of adductor magnus
Source of the sciatic nerve and divisions
formed by anterior division and posterior division of anterior rami of L4,5,S1,2,3
Anterior division supply flexor muscle -> Tibia nerve (posterior compartment of thing and leg)
Posterior division supply extensor muscle -> Common fibula (anterior and lateral compartment of leg)
Borders of popliteal fossa
Superior: Semimembranous and semitendenious (superior medially) and biceps femoris (superior laterally)
Inferior: Medial and lateral heads of gastrocnemius
Floor: popliteal surface of femur, capsule of knee joint and popliteus muscle and fascia
Roof: Fascia latte, sml saphenous vein (pieces it here), posterior cutaneous nerve of thigh
Contents of popliteal fossa
Tibial n
Common fibula n
Popliteal A, V and LN
Fat
Branches of tibial n
Vertical Motor branches at popliteal region: plantaris muscle Heads of gastrocnemius soleus Popliteus Cutaneous branch = sural n join branches from common fibula (fibula communicating nerve) to supply lateral foot. Inferior to gastrocnemius, Motor branches lower down Tibialis posterior Flexor digitorum longus Flexor hallucis longus Branches to knee joint genicular nerve supplies medial co lateral ligament, medial capsule and cruciate ligament.
Common fibula path and branches
Path: inferior to bicep tendon over plantaris muscle, wraps around neck of fibula and then divides.
Branches:
Fibula communicating nerve which joins the sural n
Lateral cutaneous nerve - supplies the superior laterally and superior posterior skin
superior and inferior Genicular n supply capsule lateral of knee joint
current genicular n supply the tibial fibular joints
Terminal branches
superficial
Deep
Muscles
Fibularis longus (before divide)
Popliteal Artery
Artery is the deepest structure in the fossa length is a hand breath above and below Branches Divides Supplies gastrocnemius heads Genicular branches x5
Politeal veins
Between art and nerve
Anterior and post tibial vein and small saphenous vein
