Posterior Pituitary Gland Flashcards
Where is the pituitary gland located?
Hanging from the hypothalamus of the brain
What are the two functional lobes of the pituitary gland?
Anterior pituitary gland
Posterior pituitary gland
What type of tissue is the anterior pituitary gland composed of?
Glandular tissue
What type of tissue is the posterior pituitary gland made of?
Neural tissue
What is the function of the posterior pituitary gland?
Storage facility for hormones created in the hypothalamus
What are the hormones released in the posterior pituitary gland?
Oxytocin
Antidiuretic (ADH)
Human Growth Hormone (HGH)
What is the main function of oxytocin? (Posterior)
Causes milk ejection; the “let down reflex”; helps breast tissue prepare milk; uterus contractions
What are the three uterus contractions that oxytocin stimulates?
During labor, sexual activity, breast feeding
What is the main function of antidiuretic? (Posterior)
Inhibits urine production (diuresis); promoting water absorption by the kidneys
What is hyposecretion of ADH a first sign of? What does hyposecretion cause?
Diabetes insipidus; frequent urination
What may inhibit (increase) ADH?
Alcohol
