Rock Against Racism

A

Founded 1976 by musicians and music journalists, many with left-wing politics
Ended in 1981 due to divisions in left, but long lasting cultural impact
Attempted to use live music to catalyse solidarity among black, Asian and white youth

Racism in late 1970s Britain led to Rock Against Racism: National Front Street Movement growinng
White musicians (Eric Clapton, David Bowie) made 'troubling' statements - Claptop supported politicians on stage that wanted to send immigrants back to countries of birth, Bowie occasionally talked approvingly on facism.

More successful for left than other political campaigning (Anti-Nazi League). Linked racism directly to Imperialism, as a British problem
