The D-Day landings happened along the coast of Normandy. The Allies had been planning this for months. The event came as a shock to the Germans – they didn’t believe the Allies would attack in Calais. Germany fought back powerfully, but the Allies were much stronger – they had more soldiers and supplies.
Dropping the atomic bomb ?
By the summer of 1945, Japan had lost almost all the land it had taken control of in the Pacific. The Japanese soldiers were retreating. There was a possibility that the Allies would attack Japan, but that would lead to many people being killed. Japan was not willing to stop fighting. As a result, the President of the USA, Harry S Truman, took the decision to use the atomic bomb to bring the war to a quick end.

The Ku Klux Klan was formed. Set up during reconstruction of the South after the Civil War in 1865, it aimed to promote ‘white supremacy’ by intimidating, attacking and lynching black people.
