Q

why does brexit present an ongoing threat to the future of devolution?

A

-john major and tony blair warned that johnson’s brexit deal endangered the hard won northern irish peace process
-within the deal, the northern ireland protocol was designed to protect the good friday agreement by avoiding the need for border controls
-in 2021 the UK gov. threatened to suspend the protocol in response to the disruption caused by checks (of some goods coming into N.I from the rest of the UK) and the DUP threatened to withdraw from gov. in northern ireland
-the EU and the UK negotiated to try and find a way of improving the protocol
-the SNP have called for a second scottish independence referendum as a majority of scottish voters wished to remain in the EU in 2016
