Post-Midterm Flashcards
What is the primary way that computational thinking is integrated into the K-12 curriculum?
Learning ABOUT and WITH the technology.
What does Professor Jeannett Wing use CT as a shorthand for?
‘thinking like a computer scientist’
What is decomposition?
The process of breaking down a complex idea or challenging problem into smaller more manageable parts.
What is pattern recognition?
The process of recognizing patterns, humans are biological pattern recognition machines.
What is algorithm design?
A set of rules that are to be followed. Ex) A recipe
What is abstraction?
The process of carefully selecting the qualities we care about and ignoring the rest of the details.
What is operationalization?
The process of defining a fuzzy concept so as to make it clearly distinguishable or measurable, and to understand it in terms of empirical observations
What are some coding misconceptions and challenges?
- only programmers can teach coding
- students already have too much screen time
- coding does not fit the curriculum
- it is expensive
- technology changes too fast to teach
What is assistive technology (AT)?
Technology that is focused on aiding students with disabilities focuses more on individual students. It is unique, personal, customized, and dedicated.
What is the universal design for learning (UDL)?
Technology-focused towards aiding a group of people, not so much an individual student, it targets the curriculum itself. It is universal and accommodates diversity.
What is CAST? (Center for Applied Special Technology)
Provides multiple means of engagement (WHY), representation (WHAT), action and expression (HOW)
What is Face to Face Learning?
It is the counterpoint to online learning, it can be referred to direct instruction, traditional learning, ‘lecturing’, etc
What is online learning?
Courses that are offered online where the students and teacher are engaging virtually
What is a learning management system? (LMS)
A software application that is used to administer, track, report, and deliver training.
What are some common uses of LMS? What are some examples?
Track attendance, record marks, assignment submission, communication outside the classroom, showcase work.
Ex) Google Classroom, eClass (Moodle), Powerschool
What is blended learning?
A teaching approach where both traditional face-to-face instructional time and online or computer-mediated activities are integrated.
What is synchronous learning?
A learning event where the learner and instructor are in the same place at the same time.
What is asynchronous learning?
A learning event where the course is not conducted in real-time, the course material can be accessed by students at their own convenience.
What are the six different models of blending?
- Direct Instruction
- Normal Night Class
- LMS Experiment
- Rotation Model
- MOOC
- Flipped
What are the reasons to blend?
- increase student motivation and engagement
- provide students with immediate feedback
- reduce operational costs
- personalize the learning experience
- enhance competency-based learning
