Post-feminism Flashcards
How is post-feminism understood 1?
an epistemological shift and backlash against second wave feminism (Gill 2007)
How is post-feminism understood 2?
an end of feminism?
McRobbie 2009 = for feminist to be taken into account it has to be understood as having already passed away
End of feminism?
Men are now disadvantaged?
- do not do as well educationally as women
- crisis of masculinity
Post-feminism within media
link to commodity feminism: Gill 2007 states that The postfeminist citizen links meanings of empowerment and choice to material consumption
Cultural sensibility - Gill 2007
- feminist ideas are represented and neutralised in the media at the same time
- representations of gender creates desires but also fears (link to empowerment of commodity feminism but also that it is a form of controlling the masses)
What characterises this sensibility? Gill 2007 (4 factors)
1) the objectification of women to subjectification
2) individualism, choice and empowerment
3) the sexualisation of culture
4) the ‘make over paradigm’
Changes to femininity
femininity is no longer a role. Femininity is now embodied. e.g. having a sexy body
