Post Chalcedonian Developments Flashcards
Define anhypostasis and enhypostasis and its significance.
Anhypostasis = Christ human nature is without hypostasis.
Affirms only one active person/subject reinforces the notion that, as demanded by the covenant concept, the perfect fulfiller of the covenant is needed — God as God as covenant Lord, and God as man as covenant partner
Enhypostasis = Christ’s human nature is in-personal, in the person. From conception, Christ’s human nature is instantiated in the son
Significance:
o Jesus was personal as a man
o Incarnation is a dynamic act on the part of the person (the Son and in relation to the trinity).
o Human nature of Jesus is same as other human in unfallen condition, except an independent person
o Live a fully human and divine life
o Enhypostasis conceptual underpinning is that humans are imago dei
What is communcatio idiomatum?
It is the relationship of the two natures; Each nature has distinctive attributes, but has communion
o Weak CI: WITHOUT predicating attributes, transference of properties, confusing the two natures
o Strong CI: Transference of properties between the two natures
What is the extra (Calvinisticum)?
o The Son continued to exercise his divine nature in Trinitarian relation
o Not completely circumscribed by the limits of human nature
o Able to live a divine life outside (extra) his human nature, while living a fully human life in his human nature
Why two-wills is important?
o Uphold full humanity of Christ over monophysitism and Aponllinariansm
o Soteriology: by the Son’s obedience as a man to accomplish salvation
o Consistent with Trinitarian theology that triune God has one will
What are some arguments for Monothelitism?
o Christ acts from single energy and operation, which is divine will
o Affirming double wills destroys unity of natures in Christ’s person
What are the arguments for Dyothelitism?
o Will = Faculty of will (capability to will) + Object of will (what is willed)
o Christ possess both human and divine will
o Deny human will means deny humanity
o Self-determination of both wills 🡪 acts of willing in one person
o Divine will to save mankind, human will to obey
o Jesus in Garden of Gethsemane proves Dyothelitism, shows opposition of two wills
o Crucial to obedience of Jesus Christ
