Post absorptive mechanisms and energy balance Flashcards
1
Q
glucose in liver
A
- with the help of the hormone insulin
- some glucose gets stored in the liver as glycogen
- rest gets converted into acetyl CoA: some goes through krebs cycle to obtain ATP, some gets converted into triglycerides then VLDL and others
2
Q
glucose in muscle
A
with help of insulin – glucose converted into glycogen which is stored in muscles
3
Q
glucose in the brain
A
Not stored in brain but instead glucose converted to acetyl CoA in brain which then goes through the Krebs cycle to produce ATP
4
Q
triglycerides
A
Fats are combined with proteins in order to be transported named depending on molecule e.g. Chylomicrons which then travel in the lymphatic system
5
Q
summary of the fed state
A
• Fuels are oxidised to energy
• Any excess is stored;
– Triglycerides in adipose tissue
– Glycogen in liver & muscle
