Cult
A system of religious worship and devotion directed towards a particular figure or object
Moiety
Two social/ritual groups in which a people are divided
The moieties purpose is providing a balance. In order to conserve the environment but also use it, one side has the responsibility to conserve/protect the totem whilst the other has the ability to eat/use the totem
Skin names
Equivalent to last based on bloodline
Kinship is expressed through skin names, which determine personal relationships including avoidance relationships and marriage
Australian Council of Christians and Jews
Formed in 1991
Purpose = to promote cooperation between Jews and Christians
Women’s Interfaith Network
A gathering of women of different religions who work to promote mutual understanding among the followers of the various world religions
National Inquiry into the Separation of ATSI Children from Their Families

Conducted by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC)
Attempts to provide an opportunity to discover the experiences of people removed from their families
10 Point Plan a.k.a The Native Title Amendment Act 1998 (Cth)
Australian native title law created by John Howard in response to the 1996 Wik Decision
Made to place restrictions on native title claims as the Wik Decision had left too much uncertainty and threatened investment from mining companies
Smoking ceremony
Involves burning various native plants to produce smoke which are believed to have cleansing properties and the ability to ward off bad spirits
Stolen Generations
It is estimated that between 1883 and 1969, more than 6,200 children were stolen in NSW alone
Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation
NGO formed in 2001
Promotes reconciliation between ATSIs and non-ATSIs
Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody
Found that almost 1,400 deaths in prison custody have been recorded since 1980
Bringing Them Home Report
The Australian Report in 1997 of the “National Inquiry into the Separation of ATSI from Their Families”
Marked a crucial moment in the controversy known as the Stolen Generations
White Australian Policy
The Immigration Restriction Act led to the restriction of non-white immigration, which became known as the White Australia Policy
Aim = to help keep Australia British
National Church Life Survey Research
An Australian organisation that surveys Australian community attitudes and runs studies on churches in Australia every 5 years
Protection Act
Gave the Aborigines Protection Board the power to remove any Indigenous child at any time and for any reason, with the accusation that they were living in a rough/uncivilised environment
Kevin Rudd Apology
On 13 February 2008, Kevin Rudd made a formal apology to Australia’s Indigenous peoples, particularly to the Stolen Generations whose lives had been damaged by past government policies = was a big step for Aboriginal reconciliation
Assimilation Policy
It was based on the ideology that if the Aboriginal race could not be destroyed or separated, they should be integrated into European society though breeding their colours (Aboriginal women married with whites)
Freedom Riders
Inspired by the Freedom Riders of the American Civil Rights movement, students from the USYD formed a group called the Student Action for Aborigines, led by Charles Perkins (1st Indigenous to graduate tertiary education). They travelled into NSW country towns on what some of them considered a fact-finding mission
Wave Hill Walk-Off a.k.a The Gurindji Strike
Was a walk-off/strike by 200 Gurindji stockmen, house servants and their families in 1966 at the Northern Territory
They expressed their unhappiness with their poor working conditions and disrespectful treatment, protesting for their human rights
The Aboriginal Tent Embassy
Is a semi-permanent assemblage where residing activists claim to represent the political rights of Aboriginals
The Yirrkala Bark petitions
(1963) are the first traditional documents prepared by ATSIs that were recognised by the Australian Parliament = first documentary recognition of Aboriginals in Australian law
Communion
The bond uniting Christians as individuals and groups with each other and with Jesus
Civil marriages
A marriage celebrated as a civil contract without religious ceremony
Pluralistic
An advocate that various religious, ethnic, racial and political groups should be allowed to thrive in a single society
