- the improvements in transport led to the codification of rules which meant you could play more widespread
- international competitions and games could be played
- leages could be set up
- more spectators could attend
- sport became less violent
- laws against blood sports due to the RSPCA
- however because the upper class were making the rules their sports were not banned
