Q

describe how Canada’s immigration system has changed form being ethnocentric to more multicultural.

A

The Canadian Gov’t was eager to settle the west with European farmers, Firsts nations who lived there had to be moved. Immigrants from great Britain, the US, and Europe were offered free land. By the 1920s, all prairies were settled and new immigrants were working in growing and building industries. The Great Depression in the 1930s caused the gov’t to change its policy in face of poverty and unemployment. Most Canadians opposed immigrants in fear of losing jobs to newcomers. The policy was changed after WW2 and by the 1960a, Canada aimed to end discrimination and by 1976, a system was set up on a basis of a 3 class system.
