Q

Unitary State

A

Means devolved parliaments would disappear and this is only supported by 20% of the public

All laws would be equal across the UK

However this would go against the Smith commission (means Scottish parliament is permanent)

Q

Federalism

A

Refers to the division and sharing of power between national and state government - different from devolution as the division of power would be legally defined

Federalism perhaps best meets the needs of Scotland as there would be limits on the power of Westminster. It could prevent future use of section 35 orders.

Q

Independence

A

Scotland would leave the UK and have full control over legislation

62% of people in Scotland voted to stay in the EU but we left due to overall result.

To hold another referendum we need a section 30 order from Westminster which is unlikely as Conservative and Labour are against a second referendum
