Es gibt

A

literally means: it gives, however, it means “there is” if the obj. is singular; “there are” if the obj. is pl.

ex. - Es gibt keinen Rauch ohne Feuer (There is no smoke without fire)

also - gibt es can mean “there is” as well as es sind which means “there are”

About “Es”

A

sometimes Es can begin the sentence but will not be the subject. This is intended to draw attention to the sentence. In these cases, leave “es” untranslated.
