Assumption - The acknowledgement of free will

- idea that we have free will rather than being determined by internal and external factors
- the way we behave is because we have the ability to choose
- recognises we control our own behaviour
- means happiness is accessible to us all
this approach states being too deterministic is detrimental and can leave us feeling powerless

A
- explored the ties students had to their friends and family
- found students who had the strongest ties to their family were happier and there was a negative correlation between happiness and depression
- highlights how we are in control of our happiness in that we choose to engage in activities that we know make us happy

- argues that the view of pyschology may be unbalanced
- states human goodness and excellence are as authentic as disorders and distress so deserve equal attention from mental health practitioners.

- seligman distinguishes 3 desirable lives
: the pleasant life - happiness comes from pursuing positive emotions
the good life - happiness comes from pursuing activities that engage us positively
the meaningful life - happinesss comes from a deep sense of fulfilment by living for a purpose much greater than oneself
positive approach believe that our behaviour is influenced by our focus on the good life
- this contributes most predominantly to a well lived life
- refer to qualities that enrich our lives, makes life worth living and foster a strong character

- positive subjective experiences that include the ability to love, forgive, develop spiritual connections
