Positive And Negative Ion Tests Flashcards
What colour flame does Lithium produce in a flame test?
Crimson flame.
What colour flame does Sodium produce in a flame test?
Yellow flame.
What colour flame does Potassium produce in a flame test?
Lilac flame.
What colour flame does Calcium produce in a flame test?
Red flame.
What colour flame does Barium produce in a flame test?
Green flame.
How do you carry out a flame test?
First dip a wire loop in hydrochloric acid and rinse it with distilled water so it is clean.
Then dip the wire loop into a sample of the compound and put the wire into the Bunsen burner to produce a flame.
What substances produce a coloured precipitate with sodium hydroxide?
Metal ions: Calcium 2+ Copper(II) 2+ Iron(II) 2+ Iron(III) 3+ Aluminium 3+ Magnesium 2+
What does Calcium form when mixed with sodium hydroxide?
White precipitate.
What does Copper(II) form when mixed with sodium hydroxide?
Blue precipitate.
What does Iron(II) form when mixed with sodium hydroxide?
Green precipitate.
What does Iron(III) form when mixed with sodium hydroxide?
Brown precipitate.
What does Aluminium form when mixed with sodium hydroxide?
White precipitate at first but redissolves into a colourless solution when excess sodium hydroxide is added.
What Magnesium does form when mixed with sodium hydroxide?
White precipitate.
How do you test for carbonates?
Bubble the gas through limewater if the limewater turns cloudy then cabin dioxide is present.
This proves carbonate ions are present as carbonates react with dilute acids to form CO2.
What are the halide ions?
Chloride
Bromide
Iodine
