Supine (dorsal recumbent)
Patient flat on back. Used for physical assessment.
Prone
Patient lies on abdomen with head to one side and hips are NOT flexed. Promotes mouth drainage. Good for unconscious patients
Fowlers (high/semi)
Head is elevated 45-60 degrees. Semi = 30-45 degrees. High = closer to 60 degrees
Sim’s
Lower arm behind patient and upper arm flexed at shoulder and elbow. Upper legs is acutely flexed at both the hip and knee more than the lower. Used for enemas and treatment or exam of peroneal area
Lithotomy
Patient on back with hips and knees flexed and thighs apart. Used for vaginally exams and childbirth
Orthopeneic
Sitting position, leaning over pillows or table. For patient having difficulty breathing. Allows maximum chest expansion.
Trendelenburg
Lowers head of bed and raising foot of bed. Arms tucked at sides. Promotes venous return and postural drainage
