Positioning Patients & Antiembolic Stockings Flashcards
3 risk of bedrest
Muscular deconditioning
Muscle strength drop 3% per day
Disease atrophy
5 goals of repositioning
maintain the patient’s airway and circulation throughout the procedure
maintain a neutral alignment
provide comfort to the patient
prevent soft tissue or musculoskeletal and other patient injury
ensures that pressure isnt concentrated on one point in order to avoid pressure ulcers
5 Patient Bed Positions
Supported Fowler - head of the bed is elevated 45 - 60 degrees
Supine - is a back lying position
Prone - is lying chest down
Lateral - side laying
Sims - left laying with slight frontal rotation; upper right knee bent
a thrombus that breaks off and travels to the lung
Pulmonary Embolism
an intervention that restricts patients for therapeutic effect; not optimal for lung expansion
Bed rest
Exercise that the patient can perform independently
Active ROM Activities
Exercises that are carried out by someone else, without assisstance from the patient
Passive ROM Activities
How does compression stockings or thromboembolic device prevents thrombus formation?
Maintaining external pressure on the muscle of the lower extremities
Promotes venous return
Nursing interventions for patient with SOME mobility
Promote mobilization out of bed
Promote active ROM activities
Provide mobility aids
Provide analgesics
Nursing Interventions for patients with RESTRICTED mobility
application of compression stockings
positioning devices/bed settings
repositioning in bed every 2 hours
provide passive ROM activities
Performing passive ROM exercise
Working from head to toe, largest to smallest joints
Move patients extremities through the fullest ROM possible
Never force a joint beyond its capacity
Support the joint and the distal extremity during movements
Movements are slow and smooth
Repeat each movement 5x during the exercise session
Positioning Aids
Pillows
Wedges
Foot Boot
Trochanter roll
Sandbags
Hand rolls
Hand wrist splints
Trapeze bar
The ability to move easily and independently.
Mobility
The maximum amount of movement available at a joint in one of the planes of the body
Range of Motion
The purpose of Log Roll (Spinal Precaution)
Maintain alignment of the spine during repositioning
