1903 Emmeline Pankhurst set up women’s social and political union
she believed militancy was the only way to make women suffrage a concern for the government
slogan was deeds not words
they took direct action in 1908 chaining themselves to railings throwing stones through in number 10 windows and holding large rallies

The conciliation committee

A

And NUWSS and WSPU convince the government to set up a conciliation committee in 1910 to give vote to women
WSPU called militant activities to halt and a NUWSS worked closely with the committee to make the bill acceptable for all parties

January 1910 election

A

Before this 300 MPs pledged support for women suffrage
more than 250,000 signatures were presented to the House of Commons Asquith seems negative about it and it seems like it might ruin the chances of it passing
second reading was on the 11th and 12th of July despite a strong opposition it passed the second reading with 100 votes

Black Friday

A

Asquith suspended the bill after the second reading
this angered WSPU and NUWSS
WSPU called of the truce on 18 November
the WSPU protested outside of the house of commons
400 suffragettes took part
300 women fought with the police more than 150 women were victims of physical and sexual assault

What happened after Black Friday

A

The WSPU called a truce again as they hoped that the conciliation bill become a law in 1911
they refused to take part in the official census 1911 but no legal action was taken against them
NUWSS launched propaganda campaign for the INP and despite lack of interest the bill passed
suffragettes also went on hunger strike is in prison people are angry about the violence and some were attacked

A

The campaign was put on hold because of the war

representation of the people act 1918 gave someone in the vote at 30 if they are married to a householder

The suffragists

A

Campaign to win the vote for women mainly women but some men
wanted women to have the same vote as men
John Stuart Mill was a key figure for early movement organisations formed National union of women’s suffrage societies
in 1914 600 societies and over 100,000 members
leader was Millicent Fawcett who believed in constitutional campaigning for example letter writing petitioning and he’s organising meetings and using leaflets
