Porifera Flashcards
PORIFERA
What are phylum porifera?,
The sponges
What brings food particles through the collar?
Choanocytes
What ais the spongocoel?
Where choanocytes line the inner cavity
What are pores?
Way of bringing water in
How does water flow?
From ostia inwards
What are the three body plans for porifera?
Ascon, sycon, and leucon
What is the ascon body plan?
The most simple, has a chamber lined with choanocytes
What is the sycon body plan?
The next level of complexity, have multiple flagellated chambers that sort of reseble asconoids.
What is the leucon body plan?
The most complex, looks like several flagellated chambers with several incurrent canals with excurrent canals connecting the flagellated chambers with each other.
What are the three classes of porifera?
Calcarea, hexactinellida, and demospongiae
Describe class calcarea.
They are strictly marine. They have calcarious spicules made from calcium carbonate. They are very small, but might have all 3 body plans.
Describe class Hexactinellida
They are typically found in deep waters. They have spicules with 6 rays. They are also silicoius and their body plan is usually syconoid or lecenois. They have a network of cells fused into a sunctium
What is a common hexactinellida?
Venus’ flower baskets.
Describe class Demospongiae
The bulk of sponge species. Marine and freshwater. Have silicious spicules (made from silicon dioxide or glasss), They may have spongin fibers and could have 1 or both types of spicules. THey have a leucon body plan.
